One of the biggest key elements in buying a digital keyboard piano, regardless if you are a student or professional pianist, is to have it sound, as natural as, possible to an acoustic piano. If it doesn’t have a natural authentic sound to it, than the piano keyboard really defeats the purpose of playing it all. The best piano sounding keyboard will have a high quality recording built into the sound board.
Understanding the ‘Piano Sound’
Most digital keyboard sounds are recording directly from an acoustic piano onto the sound board of digital piano. The key is to find a high quality sounding keyboard that sounds as close as possible to a piano. This means it has to have a good recording. It shouldn’t sound computerized or digital. It also means you need good quality speakers built in. If you have low grade speakers even the best piano tones will sound horrible.
Also the better the polyphony, the better the piano will sound when you play it. Polyphony is the number of notes or voices that can be played at the same time. Most digital pianos has either 32, 64 or 128 polyphony. I recommend you at least have 64 for a great sounding piano. The higher the polyphony, the better and more realistic it will sound.
